In a recently published report of the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF) on the impact of lint cotton produced under the Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) programme, the findings have stated that cotton is absolutely environment friendly. Unlike the conventionally irrigated cotton, the cultivation of CmiA cotton efficiently uses low amount of resources and production facilities that make it possible to minimise greenhouse gas emissions that result from cotton production. Also, because of the rain fed agriculture, a tremendous amount of water is saved as upstream processes where surface and ground water is used, contribute only 7 per cent. It takes 3,400m³ of freshwater to produce 1,000 kg of CmiA lint cotton according to the report.
