
Better Work Jordan, the Jordanian arm of International Labour Organization and International Finance Corporation partnership for the improvement of living standards of the garment industry workers, has released its 6th Compliance Synthesis Report. The report provides a snapshot of the non-compliance findings between October 2013 and October 2014 in 59 factories participating to Better Work Jordan.
As per the report, no areas of non-compliance in child labour were found, however, 81 per cent factories were found to be discriminating on the basis of race, colour and origin. While under the forced labour clause, two factories denied workers access to their personal documents, all the factories were non-compliant the law forbids workers from forming unions of their own choice. Non-compliance rate in Employment Contracts and Contracting Procedures cluster with a total of 36 factories rested at 61 per cent. 39 per cent factories were found to be not providing employment contracts in Arabic and the respective mother tongue of migrant workers as required by law. Workers in six factories did not possess valid work permits and residence IDs, down seven per cent points from the previous report. The level of OSH non-compliance findings represents approximately half of total noncompliance findings.
