Regarding the management of textile waste, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and the Center’s textile committee have an agreement.
This agreement is a component of the continuing Swachh Survekshan project attempts to improve sustainability and cleanliness in the city. In order to improve the city’s standing in the cleanliness survey, emphasis is placed on the efficient classification of textile waste, which includes used clothing, dry garbage, and home hazardous waste.
Rajesh Narvekar, commissioner and administrator of NMMC, has been advocating for circular and sustainable waste management methods.
“An MoU has been signed between the civic body and the central textile committee for a practical project named ‘pilot project on sustainability and circularity in textile chain TVC (total viable count) by managing post-consumer textile waste’. This agreement marks a significant step in collaborating with the central government and various organisations, including SBI foundation, IDH India and Tisser Artisan Trust,” said Narvekar.
This cooperative project emphasises the value of circularity and sustainability in the textile chain while tackling the issues raised by textile waste. At a ceremony in New Delhi, the agreement was signed by officials from the Ministry of Textiles, the Central Textile Committee, and NMMC, including Dr. Babasaheb Rajale, the Swachh Bharat Mission’s nodal officer, and additional city engineer Shirish Aradwad.
“NMMC will be the first civic corporation in the country to have such a project for recycling and reuse of textile waste,” Rajale said.
