Well-known environmentalist/climate activist Greta Thunberg (18) has called for a ‘system change’ in the fashion industry.
In a magazine interview with Vogue, she has condemned the fashion industry over its huge contribution to climate change.
“Shoppers who buy fast fashion are encouraging the industry to continue its harmful process,” she said and added that she last bought a new item of clothing three years ago and it was second-hand.
Taking to Vogue Scandinavia, she insisted that fashion brands needed to take responsibility for the environmental impact of their products. Notably, Vogue Scandinavia featured Thunberg on the cover of its first issue.
In her tweets, she criticised fast fashion that many treat as disposables.
Calling for a system change, she said that fashion could not be mass produced and consumed ‘sustainably as the world is shaped today’.
Accusing the fashion industry of misleading consumers with its marketing about sustainability efforts, Thunberg said that many brands are promoting solutions that only appear to address the problem.
She said that these companies are often accused of greenwashing, which is a form of marketing spin designed to mislead consumers about the environmental merits of a product.
“Many are making it look as if the fashion industry is starting to take responsibility, by spending fantasy amounts on campaigns where they portray themselves as ‘sustainable’, ‘ethical’, ‘green’, ‘climate neutral’ and ‘fair,’” she wrote.
