AIDER,a Delhi-based leading NGO, working for the workers of apparel industry, has come up with a helpline to address the grievances of workers.
This is the first ever such helpline in North India for the garment workers.
AIDER has set up proper ‘Worker Resource and Facilitation Centre’ where professional counsellors manage the calls of workers and take their issues forward for solution.
Initially this helpline will support the workers of Gurugram, but in future the same will be available for the workers of Delhi-NCR.
As of now, the number (93012-09482) is shared in 32 factories’ notice board; these factories are vendors of Next, UK.
The initiative is to give confidence to the workers, as sometimes they have few reservations and avoid sharing their problems with the factory officials. Notably, workers of other factories (those not working with the Next) can also share their issues on this helpline.
“Every day we get around 8 to 10 complaints and we try to solve these problems with the support of the concerned factory. If we come across any major issue, we inform the Next team,” told VK Jha, Founder and Convener, AIDER.
He further added that workers’ problems have been put into 5 major categories which are wages, social security, health & safety, harassment and others.
“Whatever complaints, information or data we get through this helpline are totally confidential and we ensure the privacy of each stakeholder,” told VK Jha.
As of now this helpline number is shared with the workers of the factories working for Next, UK. And there are enough chances that the same will be shared with Indian suppliers of other brands and retailers.
The helpline works between 10AM and 6 PM and there is only one weekly off on Saturday.
In India, Next is working with more than 100 apparel and home furnishing manufacturers. Few of them are top players of India like Pearl Global Industries Ltd, Radnik Exports, Modelama Export, Trident Ltd., Welspun India, Arvind Ltd., First Steps Babywear and Indo Count Industries Ltd.
