Due to seasonal nature of Indian apparel export industry and scarcity of local labour, migrant workers are the base of the industry. Indian labour laws that need to change immediately are also a serious problem for the apparel manufacturing units. In this regard, it becomes very important that the apparel exporters deal with their migrant workers with understanding.
Impulse, one of the well-known Indian buying house recently organised a seminar in Gurgaon for its vendor on this serious issue. HR experts from garment industry having vast experience to deal with migrant workers shared their views in this regard.

They also discussed various problems faced by the factory owners and HR departments. Experts suggested that factories should focus more on worker engagement and issues, like health, absenteeism, overtime and their survival in the metro cities, which seems small but matters.
“We are happy to get some good suggestions like one of the participants told us that their accountant helps the workers in bank related work, which saves their time as they do not take leave to go to the bank,” said a participant not wishing to reveal his identity.
As this meet was part of Impulse’s internal process to disseminate information, detailed information was not shared about the same. Representatives of almost 30 apparel exporters participated in the meet. They appreciated the efforts of Impulse and the meet proved fruitful for everyone.
