Foshan Zhiya Underwear Company, an underwear manufacturing unit in Foshan City, Guangdong Province (South China) is ready to pay its 14-year-old dead worker’s family a sum of 150,000 Yuan (US $ 23,055) as compensation. The factory was also fined 10,000 Yuan (US $ 1,537) by the authorities for employing an underage worker. According to media reports, the dead boy, surnamed Wang, was born in June 2001 and introduced into the company by his mother. He worked as a sewing machine operator from March 5 to April 10 in the factory and was found dead on April 11 in his home.
However, the public is not satisfied with such light fines being stamped on the unit. It is being said by the worker’s family that the juvenile had worked for 11 to 12 hours every day before the tragedy, and the sudden death might be the result of the heavy work load.
