Seeking minimum wages as recommended by the Union Government, many workers of Texport Industries, till the last information received, are agitating at Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh).
Texport Industries is India’s leading apparel exporter. As per a report of The Hindu, the unit situated at Hindupur industrial estate close to the Karnataka border is facing agitation since last 1 week.
Notably, more than 4,000 workers of the factory participated in this agitation.
While talking to Apparel Resources, Naren Goenka, MD of the company, said “We are paying wages that are much higher than the wages of State Government. Around 70 per cent of our workers are working. Those who are agitating have been misguided and we are trying our best to guide these workers.”
As per the media reports, seeking resolution of the dispute, few political parties and trade union also staged a dharna in front of Tahsildar’s office and submitted a memorandum to the local authority.
Addressing the workers, Ch. Narasinga Rao, State President, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) said that the Union Government had passed a law making Rs. 18,000 as the minimum wage all over the country, but this was not being implemented in many industries. The US $ 80 million Texport Industries with several garment manufacturing units across the country pays the lowest wages to the Hindupur unit workers,” he said.
He further added that the senior officer of the labour department has assured to hold a joint meeting of the workers, management and the department to discuss the wage revision issue.
