According to a report published by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) based on the industrial production sector up till 2010-11, the country’s industrial sector is not running at full production capacity. Comprised of 42,592 factories (including every factory with more than 10 people) out of which 17,967 factories are in the textile sector including 6,984 ready-made garment factories. Conducted after every five years, the survey states that out of 42,592 factories in the country, 13,906 are unable to run at 25 per cent to 50 per cent of their production capacity. Only 1,691 factories produce 50 per cent to 76 per cent of their production capacity while 25,121 factories lie between 75 per cent and 100 per cent of their capacity. Further, production output of 2,075 factories exceeds their capacity. According to Kutubuddin Ahmed, former President, Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Envoy Group, Head, production suffers due to long standing problems of political unrest and gas, electricity and fuel crisis.
