One of the pioneers in the field of suit manufacturing, Madura Clothing started their first suit manufacturing facilities way back in 2001, by the name of Crafted Clothing with an initial capacity of 400 suits per day, which was later increased as per the rise in demand to 2500 suits and 4000 trousers. Now the company is looking at increasing the capacity to 3000 suits, owing to increased demands. “We presently have around 1000 sewing machines, which will be increased to 1200 machines. The infrastructure and machines are already in place and we are currently in the process of training people for the same,” said Jayarajan K R, General Manager – Category Operations (Suits & Trousers), Madura Clothing. Currently the company has 3 lines for jackets and 9 lines for trousers. “We are very flexible in terms of order size which varies from 1 piece to 300-400 pieces. The people are multi skilled to handle different styles and changes and are able to handle piece to piece colour or style variation,” he adds. The company is also open to made-to-measure manufacturing.
Part of the Aditya Birla Group, known for its continuous Employee Engagement Initiatives, is also in the process of GSD implementation in its suits manufacturing facility. Although Madura has always had GSD licensed practitioners as part of its key management teams, but never really adopted the GSD solution per se. “We have started the implementation in March this year, with focus on further improving our already Lean manufacturing operations,” concludes Jayarajan.
