There are already 11 Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) in textile and apparel industry and now one more EPC is in under process. EPC for technical textiles soon will be a reality as Ministry of Textiles issued a notification in this regard.
Of the 207 items notified as technical textiles in January 2019, there are 12 products of apparel. The global market for these 12 products is estimated to be US $ 11 billion, though India’s export is only US $ 93 million.
This indicates a huge potential in these products if dedicated export promotion activities are undertaken for these products.
It is pertinent to highlight here that Technical Textiles is one of the focused areas for the Ministry of Textiles and the Government has announced few steps to promote the same.
Dr. A. Sakthivel, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), welcomed the Government’s decision to form EPC for Technical Textiles as he believes that it will boost exports and strengthen the domestic manufacturing capacity in this sunrise sector.
“I am confident that with the formation of a dedicated EPC and inclusion of technical textiles in the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, the sector will witness overall growth – in investment, capacity building and exports,” he said.
