Italian textile technology has long been an ally of India’s textile industry, and a new promotional campaign is now in motion to enhance trade ties between the two countries within the textile sector. This initiative will see 11 Italian textile machinery manufacturers participating in upcoming technological events set to take place in New Delhi and Mumbai in April. Organised by the Italian Trade Agency and backed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, these events will provide a platform for Italian companies to present their latest technologies to a carefully selected audience of Indian textile entrepreneurs.
The textile industry holds significant importance in the Indian economy, contributing over 2% to the GDP and positioning the country as one of the world’s largest exporters of textile and apparel items. Additionally, India stands as the third-largest foreign market for the Italian textile machinery sector.
Marco Salvadè, the president of ACIMIT, remarks on India’s evolving textile sector, noting its growth beyond textiles into areas such as geotextiles and medical textiles. This expansion presents new opportunities for the industry, particularly in terms of technical textiles. The events will serve as a platform to showcase the offerings of Italian manufacturers, who excel in sustainability and the digitalisation of production processes.
In 2022, India imported Italian textile machinery amounting to approximately € 200 million. While there has been a slight decrease in value during the first nine months of 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year, the outlook for the current year remains positive.
