The Government is set to launch the highly anticipated ‘INDIAsize’ initiative, aimed at creating standardised measurements tailored to Indian body types, announced Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Thursday. Currently, both international and domestic brands in India use US or UK sizing, which includes ‘small,’ ‘medium,’ and ‘large’ categories. However, these sizes are often ill-fitting due to differences in height, weight, and body proportions between Western and Indian body types.
To address these fitting issues, the Ministry of Textiles has approved the INDIAsize project, which will develop standardised body sizes specifically for the Indian apparel market. “I am working to have the Prime Minister inaugurate INDIAsize, and the launch should happen soon,” Singh revealed.
At the 2017 Global Textile Summit, the Prime Minister pointed out the lack of India-specific trend data for industry stakeholders. In response, India is focusing on creating a tech-driven trend prediction system that combines domestic insights with global influences, aiming to better understand the preferences and aspirations of Indian consumers.
