Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the Indian-origin multinational technology company, has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) platform designed to generate three-dimensional models of saree and fabric designs, with the aim of enhancing both design accuracy and weaving efficiency.
The company showcased the solution, branded the Intelligent Design Platform, at the recently concluded AI Impact Summit. The platform enables customers to create customised textile designs while assisting weavers in translating them into loom-ready outputs with greater precision.
An executive at the Tata exhibition booth stated that the system allows customers to request, for instance, a modern pattern blended with a traditional Kanjivaram-style saree. The executive explained that the platform generates such designs instantly, enabling weavers to concentrate on craftsmanship rather than navigating complex pattern calculations.
According to the company, the platform significantly reduces the time required for design selection and colour combinations — compressing a process that typically takes days or weeks into a matter of minutes. It also aims to address inefficiencies in the handloom sector, where products are frequently returned due to mismatched designs or execution errors. The executive estimated that such returns account for approximately 40% of output in certain segments.
In addition, TCS demonstrated a complementary solution known as Smart Weaver Assist, an LED-based guidance system that provides real-time visual cues on thread movement. The executive said the system enables faster weaving of sarees and fabrics and supports less-experienced weavers in executing intricate patterns without memorising lengthy sequences.
The executive further stated that the TCS team has successfully piloted the software in the Kanjivaram saree cluster in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, a region internationally recognised for its heavy silk sarees. Although the technology has not yet been commercially launched, the company is reportedly in discussions with the Handloom Corporation of India and the Union Ministry of Textiles to facilitate wider adoption and ensure that both weavers and consumers benefit from the innovation.
Under the new system, traditional manual drawing of Kanjivaram saree patterns is replaced by AI-generated designs. The platform can process voice commands, hand-drawn sketches or reference images, converting them into loom-compatible digital formats.
Once finalised, customers are able to preview the design in three dimensions or through augmented reality before weaving commences, allowing them to assess the final appearance of the fabric in advance.
