
Japan’s sluggish economic condition is reflected in the apparel imports of the country which is almost on similar trajectory seen in last few months as it is negative in value terms and positive in terms of volume.
In the first six months, the value of total apparel imports by Japan declined by (-) 7.03 per cent while the volume was up marginally by 2.45 per cent. During the period, knitted segment registered a decline of (-) 7.68 per cent in value, while woven recorded a drop of (-) 6.44 per cent, year on year. However, both these segments showed a positive figure in terms of quantity; while knitted garments registered 2.67 per cent increase in volume, woven garments were up 1.82 per cent.

Even after the eight months, the trend has not changed. Although the value of total apparel imports by the country was down (-) 8.56 per cent, the volume registered a year-on-year increase of 3.18 per cent to 4,357.29 million Kgs as compared to 4,222.97 million Kgs last year. The value in the knitted segment, during the period under consideration, decreased by (-) 8.74 per cent, while in the woven value showed (-) 8.39 per cent decline. However, in terms of volume both knitted and woven segments registered an increase of 3.41 per cent and 2.52 per cent, respectively.
