The powerloom industry, which once made Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi a famous worldwide centre for textile production, is currently dealing with serious difficulties.
Powerloom owners blame a bad business climate and certain Government regulations for the industry’s downfall ahead of the union budget. Many of the powerlooms, which formerly numbered in the lakhs, are reportedly being sold as scrap as they are gradually being destroyed.
Many in the business blame a combination of the introduction of technologically advanced auto-looms, GST, and demonetisation for the sector’s dire situation.
In order to stop the sector’s collapse, powerloom owners have encouraged the Government to include measures in the next union budget. On 1st February, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will deliver the union budget.
