Anticipating colossal festive season sales owing to the shifting consumer behaviour leading them to rely more and more on online shopping than visiting physical stores during the current unprecedented times, India’s two e-commerce majors Amazon and Flipkart are holding discussions with a number of warehouse operators across the country to temporarily lease space to them.
Though the two firms have their own fulfillment centres, their latest decision is based on their strong prediction that their sales during the approaching festive season would leave them with the need for more space than they already have.
It must be noted here that Amazon has already taken nearly 3 lakh square feet of space at National Highway 8 in Gurugram for a few months and is negotiating with others to lease more space.
On the other hand, Flipkart too is in talks with various buyers for the same.
Abhijit Malkani, CEO, ESR, a logistics developer, mentioned that while this is not a new practice and online retailers used to temporarily take space before festive seasons earlier also, ‘the size of such deals is expected to be bigger’ this time around.
The size of temporary lease usually ranges between 50,000 and 1.5 lakh square feet.
