In keeping with its objective to discard the packaging material by June, Amazon India on Monday announced that it has removed all single-use plastic in its packaging across all its fulfillment centres in the country.
“We have successfully eliminated single-use plastic in all our fulfillment centres a 100 per cent,” said Akhil Saxena, Vice President – Customer Fulfillment for the APAC, LATAM and Middle East and North Africa regions.
The e-commerce major further revealed that apart from replacing packaging materials like bubble wraps and air pillows with ‘paper cushions’, it has also replaced packaging tapes with other bio-degradable options.
Often criticised for its excessive use of plastic and thermocol for wrapping its shipment packages, Amazon had announced in September 2019 that its India unit would eliminate single-use plastic in its packaging by June 2020.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has impacted some of the work at Amazon India, the company has managed to achieve its target, as it began working towards it even before the national lockdown came into effect.
