Amazon Inc aims to help Indian exporters sell US $ 5 billion in small-ticket items through its platform this year in regions such as the United States and the United Kingdom, up from almost US $ 3 billion in 2023, according to a company official.
Under the Amazon Global Selling program, which began in 2015, around 150,000 small exporters in India are anticipated to sell their items directly to international customers via the company’s e-commerce platform.
“We are investing significantly in tools and technologies to help sellers optimise their reach, enhance product discovery, and increase sales,” Bhupen Wakankar, director of global trade at Amazon, told Reuters in an interview on Thursday, ahead of an exporters’ meeting in New Delhi.
According to a corporate release, Amazon is on target to help tens of thousands of Indian enterprises reach a total of US $ 13 billion in e-commerce exports by the end of 2024.
The decision by one of the world’s top e-commerce companies highlights India’s rising position in the global supply chain and reflects a broader trend among multinational organisations to diversify their supplies away from China.
Walmart Inc announced in 2020 that it wanted to increase its supplies from India to US $ 10 billion per year by 2027, up from around US $ 3 billion at the time.
According to Wakankar, Amazon has teamed with India’s commerce ministry and trade associations to connect with small manufacturers around the country, supplying products such as textiles and clothes.
Wakankar stated that the company hopes to assist US $ 20 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports from India by 2025.
