The American fast fashion retailer, Forever 21, is facing fines of nearly US $ 2,50,000 for exposing its staff to a series of alleged health and safety hazards. According to the US Department of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Paramus store had obstructed exit routes; a fire extinguisher that was not mounted and readily accessible; material that was stored in a way that did not guard against sliding or collapse; and fluorescent lights that were not covered to prevent accidental contact or breakage.
“It is unacceptable for Forever 21 to continue repeating these violations, which are common among retailers, and put workers at serious risk. Retail Managers have a legal responsibility to inspect their stores, identify potential hazards and quickly eliminate them to ensure worker safety and health,” said Robert Kulick, OSHA’s Regional Administrator in New York. Forever 21 has 15 business days to comply with OSHA’s findings, meet informally with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
