Amid the rise for sustainable practices in the fashion space, major fashion and footwear brands have entered a strategic collaboration with Fashion for Good to launch “Closing the Footwear Loop,” a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting circularity in the footwear industry.
This collaborative project seeks to revolutionise the current linear “take-make-dispose” model and transition to a circular economy for footwear. Globally, the footwear industry produces approximately 23.8 billion pairs of shoes each year, contributing significantly to environmental strain. Moreover, the complex construction of shoes, often involving over 60 different components, makes recycling and circularity particularly difficult.
The project focuses on key intervention points, including the lack of end-of-life infrastructure, the challenge of complex multi-material designs, and the need for unified circularity approaches.
Participating brands include industry giants such as adidas, DEICHMANN, Dr. Martens, Inditex, lululemon, ON, Otto Group, Puma, Reformation, Target, Tommy Hilfiger, Vivobarefoot, and Zalando, alongside the Footwear Innovation Foundation. Fashion for Good is also working with ecosystem partners The Footwear Collective, Global Footwear Future Coalition (GFFC), and Global Fashion Agenda to ensure a collaborative approach across the entire industry.
The initiative will deliver concrete results, including a detailed mapping of European footwear waste streams, a roadmap towards circular footwear design and innovations that will overcome the hurdles of short life-span of products and support higher adoption of recycled materials.
The project acknowledges the complex challenges inherent in footwear circularity. Unlike apparel, where circular innovation has seen more progress, the multi-material construction and intricate design of shoes complicate sorting, disassembly, and effective recycling. “Closing the Footwear Loop” aims to address these challenges head-on through collaboration and innovation.
Katrin Ley, Managing Director of Fashion for Good has said that the footwear industry is currently at a critical junction and the sustainble initiative launched by the company represents a ambitious effort. The MD also highlighted that the collaboration is not just to address the challenge but to “create a blueprint for systemic change”.
Fashion for Good, the driving force behind this initiative, is a pioneer of collaborative innovation in the fashion industry. The organization is supported by founding partner Laudes Foundation, co-founder William McDonough, and numerous industry partners committed to driving positive change in fashion.
