A garment unit in Mumbai’s Bhandup west had a fire break out on Sunday evening. The flames were doused by fire officials by 8:12 PM. Despite all the garment materials being burnt in the fire, no injuries were reported from the incident.
The incident took place in a garment unit next to Shreeram College in Bhandup west and was confined to the ground floor along with a single upper-floor structure. The fire affected the unit’s electric wiring, installations and garment materials. Four fire engines and two water tankers of Mumbai’s fire brigade were rushed to the site with fire officials and the fire was declared as a level 1 fire.
The offices of the garment unit were housed on the ground floor with the first floor having a stock of readymade garments in an area of around 2,000 square feet. The fire tender has difficulty reaching the spot due to narrow lanes. The fire also consumed furniture and sewing machines along with the garment stocks.
“The big stock of garments on first floor caught fire. The fire has been extinguished and the cooling operation is underway. Since the unit was closed on Sunday, no one was injured. The exact reason behind the fire is yet to ascertain, our team will inspect the structure tomorrow morning and prepare investigation report,” said D.M. Patil, senior station officer of Mulund fire station.
