In a tragic incident, four workers died after inhaling poisonous gas when they went inside a tank, to clean chemical waste, at Vishal Fabrics (a unit of Chiripal Group). The unit is situated in Koth area of Dholka town of Ahmedabad.
Vishal Fabrics Limited is one of the well-known denim mills of India, who supply fabric for leading global brands like Zara, H&M, Emporia Armani and many others.
The workers followed each other into the tank after the first worker to go inside failed to respond.
The deceased have been identified as Mayur Jayanti Barad, Vijay Babubhai Barad, Prabhubhai Punabhai Jamod and Pravin Dharamshibhai Rathod. They were in their early 20s and were hired by a private contractor.
Notably, just 6 months back in February 2020, 7 workers from another unit of the Group had also lost their lives.
The police have filed an accidental death report in the incident. Senior police official, Nitesh Pandey, told that probe is going on in this regard. “When the bodies were found, neither were the men wearing protective suits with oxygen supply nor were they tied to a rope. However, the protective equipment was lying near the tank,” local media quoted him.
As per rules, it is mandatory that in such cases the company-appointed safety officer checks all the equipment and then only signs the work order to clean the tank.
Jignesh Mevani, an independent legislator, has demanded a probe against the Group. He alleged that workers were not given safety equipment.
