As thousands of workers of textile and apparel industry are badly impacted by coronavirus and subsequent lockdown across the nation, few of the NGOs have come forward to support them.
In Dindigul (Tamil Nadu), Serene Secular Social Service Society (SSSSS) identified 592 very poor rural women of the textile industry and migrants of states like Assam and West Bengal, who have been largely affected by the pandemic.
The NGO distributed the relief items to these affected workers in Sanarpatty, Natham, Vedasanthur, Vadamadurai, Reddiyarchathiram and Dindigul blocks of Dindigul district.
The relief materials consist of 13 kg rice, 21 grocery items and health supplies including sanitary napkins.
James Victor, Director, SSSSS, said “The rural poor labourers of the industries were left jobless that drove their family to starvation and the relief items announced by the Government were inadequate to their families. There is a strong need for responsive stakeholders who are responsible to feed their labourers in the coming months.”
Along with S. James Victor, S. Dhivya, A. Ingarsal, S. John Peter, T. Panjampatty, J. Vinnarasi Sahayarani, S. Rosario, Saravanan and R. Dinesh Jeeva, Gomathi and L. Poongodi of various organisations also helped in overall initiative.
