
Moving more towards increasing India’s market share in the technical textile industry, the National Technical Textile Mission under the Ministry of Textiles (MoT) issued guidelines for enabling academic institutes in technical textiles – both for private and public institutes – and general guidelines for grant of internship support in technical textiles.
The guidelines for promoting start-ups in technical textiles are under formulation and are expected to release in one month.
The areas covered under funding include laboratory equipment and training of lab personnel, specialised training. Laboratory infrastructure funding support will be from Rs. 15 crore to Rs. 4 crore depending on the eligible department, courses and criterion. With support for training, the same will be Rs. 30 lakh to Rs. 1 crore.
In case of full course on technical textiles (UG and PG), it can be Rs. 20 crore for lab infrastructure.
Grant for internship support in technical textiles has also been announced for students pursuing B Tech/undergraduate from various departments/specialisation. There will be a maximum of 50 interns per academic year, grant for whom will be up to Rs. 20,000 per student per month (for the period of two months).
During a press interaction, Secretary of Ministry of Textiles, Rachna Shah informed that the clearance was given during a meeting of the Empowered Programme Committee (EPC).
The MoT intends to develop a ecosystem in technical textiles not only for the textile field but also for other disciplines of engineering like civil, mechanical, electronics; agriculture institutes; medical colleges; fashion institutes.

Secretary said that driven by the set of highly educated and skilled professionals, India will take a huge leap in the cutting-edge research, production and innovative applications related to technical textiles.
The MoT also issued guidelines for inviting research proposals for indigenous development of technical textiles machinery/tools/equipment and instruments, which allows participation from private industries also. Premier research organisations like DRDO, CSIR have also been approached for inviting research proposals.
The launch of guidelines for education and training will be on 10th January and closes on 2nd March.
Regarding training, general guidelines for Grant for Internship Support in Technical Textiles (GIST), all applications will be accepted up to 23rd February.
It is pertinent to mention here that as per the data available, India’s total market size in technical textiles is around US $ 20.5 billion while the export of the same is US $ 2.21 billion.
