Uttar Pradesh, one of the biggest states of India and having garment manufacturing hubs like Noida, Ghaziabad, Kanpur and Lucknow, has seen the heat of increased minimum wage.

The State Government has now issued a notification in this regard.

So, what’s the new minimum wage in the state? It is Rs. 8,278.94 per month for an unskilled worker. The latest hike is from Rs. 266 to Rs. 328 into different categories as per the skill level of workers.

The state’s minimum wage is now higher compared to many other leading garment manufacturing hubs in the country.

Minimum Wage (in Rs.)
Category Monthly pay Daily pay
Unskilled 8,278.94 318.42
Semi-skilled 9,106.83 350.26
Skilled 10,201.09 392.35

The rates are applicable for garment manufacturing, knitted garments, printing, handwork, dyeing-processing, etc.

Garment manufacturers of the state are helpless on this issue as they are already under pressure of tight costing and now increased wage has further increased their costing.

Most of the state-based manufacturers are of the view that though buyers know that minimum wage increases here on a regular basis (twice in year), they refuse to increase price. Consequently, they (manufacturers) have to bear this cost, which ultimately brings losses for them.
