A budget of Rs. 25 lakh has been allocated by the Tamil Nadu Government (India) to promote technical textiles, this was announced by the Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, O.S. Manian.
The Minister was attending a two-day workshop on technical textiles organised at the Sir Vallabbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management in the textile hub. The institute has a dedicated technical textiles wing and is a national-level organisation that provides comprehensive education, training, consultancy and research in textile management.
The workshop on “Technical Textiles” was organised in association with Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Tamil Nadu on March 10-11 for the existing and budding textile businesses.
At the event, Manian urged the textile entrepreneurs to go for technical textiles and explore the opportunities available in this category, as he feels that it is the only way to combat the rising competition from other manufacturing hubs such as China, Bangladesh and Vietnam.
The budget allocation is part of the Government’s efforts to support the development of the handloom and textiles sector in the state, said the Minister.
“Technical textiles is a boon to Indian textile industry as it provides a new opportunity to the industry to grow,” added K. Phanindra Reddy, Principal Secretary, Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department.
It is pertinent to note that the Government is organising a series of programmes in the state to promote technical textiles production over months.
The textile industry in Tamil Nadu is the forerunner in industrial development and provides massive employment to the people of the state. According to Department of Handloom and Textile’s website, Tamil Nadu is home to 893 mills out of the total 2,049 large and medium textile mills in India.
