From the family of bamboo, hemp and linen, comes yet another revolutionary textile – the ‘Banana Fabric’, extracted directly from the fibres of the banana trees. Already made commercial, Banana fibres today are readily available in Uganda and its fabric earlier known as Jusi fabric is now made in handful of places in Southeast Asia. One of the most common examples of the same can be seen in the form of Nepalese rugs which are made from bleached and dried fibres of the banana plant that are hand-knotted into silk-like rugs. While the fibre’s length, colour and strength depends on the part of the tree that they come from, the outer layer’s fibres are coarse and strong and are generally used for table cloths while the inner layer makes the finest, silkiest fabric. Featuring a strong moisture absorption and release quality, the fabric is bio-degradable and has no negative effect on environment and thus can be categorized as eco-friendly fibre, which can be used for both woven and knitted fabrics.
