In March, this year The Alliance (a group of 26 North American apparel companies, retailers and brands) shared a list of some 100 factories with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), claiming that they were not conducting Detailed Engineering Analysis (DEA) required for remediation. Now BGMEA and the Alliance recently had a meeting where it disclosed the list of 121 apparel factories where remedial work is very slow and the progress is not satisfactory.
According to media reports, the percentage of remediation work in those units ranges between 2 per cent and 18 per cent, although nearly one year has elapsed after the Corrective Action Plan (CAP) – the prescription how to carry out the flaw fixing programme following inspection – was approved and provided to the management of each factory. It was decided to take the issue to the National Tripartite Committee for National Tripartite Plan of Action for Fire Safety and Structural Integrity in RMG Sector in Bangladesh.
