Mumbai’s Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) has been awarded Rs. 10 crore grant by the Ministry of Textiles as part of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM). VJTI plans to allocate Rs. 9.5 crore for machinery and equipment upgrades and the remaining 50 lakhs for training initiatives. To mark this achievement, the Textile Department of VJTI organised an event attended by industry leaders and aspiring technical textile professionals.
During the event, Roop Rashi, the Textile Commissioner at the Ministry and Guest of Honour for the event, extended her congratulations to the institute. She highlighted the significance of technical textiles as the fastest-growing segment today, noting that while the traditional sector has its limitations due to industry saturation, the technical textiles sector, due to its advanced nature, offers immense opportunities. She further points out that there is a ‘humungous scope’ in this sector for young aspirants.
NTTM is an initiative drawn by the Government of India to support the technical textiles industry and promoting the development of educational institutions for training and skill development of future professionals. The Ministry of Textiles has recently allocated grants of Rs. 10 crore and Rs. 7 crore to institutions such as NIT Jalandhar and Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). Notable institutions benefiting from this mission include IIT Delhi, NIFT Mumbai, ICT Mumbai, Anna University, and Amity University, among others.
